Hi everyone, Alex here,
One of the most valuable experiences that I will always remember from high school was being a part of a team. I lived for cross country and track all four years of high school; I couldn’t get enough of it! Not only were my teammates the best friends I could’ve asked for, but my coach was a woman who truly had a positive impact on my life. She always believed in me and pushed me past my limits to help me make me the best runner I could be. I’m still in touch with my coach, even though I’ve long since graduated high school, and she will continue to be a role model in my life for many more years.
Having an inspiring coach, combined with my love for running, led me to seek out a path toward coaching. After doing a little searching, I was presented with the wonderful opportunity of volunteer as an assistant coach for girls’ indoor track at E.O. Smith High School! Coach Cassandra Rowett welcomed me with open arms and allowed me to assist her in practices, mainly working with the distance runners. At the start of the season, I was a slightly nervous; would they warm up to me? Would I be able to take charge when needed? Immediately I fell in love with the girls; going to practice became the highlight of my day! Always smiling and laughing, making running fun, these young ladies truly embodied team spirit. As the indoor track season comes to a close this week for the girls, I look back on the season as one of the most incredible and enjoyable experiences I’ve had in college. I can’t wait for outdoor track!!!
