UConn Learning Communities from the Eyes of a B.C.L.C. Student

Dream Team Success

Hola, Normaliz here,

UConn does a great job with providing housing for us students. We have the highest percentage of students living on any public university campus nationwide. You can live in a typical dorm, or live in suites and even apartments. Within the dorms, you can pick a Learning Community that houses students within the same majors or with similar interests. There are over 20 Learning Communities that range from Global House to the Pre-Pharmacy House.

Learning Communities are designed to help you meet people that share interests with you, as well as get involved right inside your Residence Hall, so you can think of it as another club you can join and you live with them as well. Depending on the Learning Community, they create events all throughout the year to provide you knowledgeable and fun activities related to student’s specific interests. They can even be a leadership opportunity by being on the Board and helping design and follow through with these events.

During the past two years at UConn, I have been a part of the Business Connections Learning Community (BCLC). It gave me a chance to meet students from all of the Business Majors and it has given me guidance within my School to determine if I see myself pursuing an Accounting Degree once I graduate. Some of the activities that have been done in the BCLC include speakers, field trips, international trips, sports, and even painting our door frames!

Our Business Connections Learning Community took a trip to Paris!

I've met so many people within my LC who share my ambitions! We've also met many successful UConn alumni.

These have been all important to me because not only have I gained more knowledge into the Business School and what future employers are searching for, but I have found friends that share some of the values and goals that are important to me and made my transition to College a completely different and better experience.

One of your group bonding moments was through painting our dorm door frames.

Hello everyone, I am a Political Science major, originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico. During my time at UConn I have been involved with the Puerto Rican Latin American Culture Center (PRLACC), especially in their Mentoring Program. I started as a Mentee my freshman year and I am currently a Mentor with my very own Mentee which I have the opportunity to help during her first year at the school and for years to come. My previous years I lived in the Business Connections Learning Community and experienced firsthand how the alumni come to talk to current students and I even went on an international trip through the Community to Paris!
