Linked Out – A UConn Student Ditches Social Media

Chi here!

So I remember back in 2005 when I first got my facebook. Back then in order to have a facebook, you needed to be invited by a college student so my older sister invited me. I was so excited because it made me feel so cool and much older than my other friends in high school. I quickly sent facebook invitations to all my friends to join. By my senior of high school, I had accumulated about 500 friends and was in a facebook relationship with my high school sweetheart. I loved facebook but by the time college rolled around, twitter became my new interest. I became the queen of twitter (a nickname I gave myself). I had so many followers that I could barely keep track of it. @kindle.com, my twitter name at that time, began to take a life on its own. I went from being called Chi to kindle.com but like everything else with me, twitter got really old really fast.

I decided to ditch both social networks last year and since then I can say my life has changed quite a bit. I hardly know of anything going on in regards to social events because I am never invited LOL!. I never know of any cool trending topics on twitter nor do I blog about anything on tumblr. So the question I get a lot is will I ever get a new twitter or a facebook and the answer to that is really simple, NO. I have been content this past year without a twitter or a facebook. Even though I can rarely remember anyone’s birthdays anymore without the help of the little birthday box on facebook, I am still a normal college student who is just not in touch with anything social media related. I just recently ditched my blackberry which was my life for the iphone 4. No blackberry means no bbm which was the one social media I did have. So now I am completely LINKED OUT from everything.

As time passes a new social network will become the new phenomenon and I can guarantee you I will still not be a part of that world. Social media is just not my thing. I don’t think it is important for me to have 200 people following me and knowing my every move or for the world to know what I wore on Friday night from my new picture album. Obviously being part of the social media world keeps you in the loop and clued but I guess I like to be linked out. Even though there are times I wish I could tweet the things I see, I am still happy without any form of social network.
